ICPC organizes anti-corruption sensitization programme for Council Staff

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has organized a one day sensitization programme for members of staff of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) in Abuja.

The sensitization programme which was facilitated by the NSDC branch of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) was put together to conscientize, educate and enlighten staff of the Council on the need to imbibe the culture of integrity and shun corrupt practices while discharging their statutory functions as civil servants.

In a welcome address, NSDC ACTU Chairman and Director, Executive Secretary’s Office (DESO), Malam Ahmed M. Waziri said the awareness programme was to promote transparency, discipline and accountability at the work place. He said the Council is committed to evolving sound work ethics that would position it as a leading, responsive and responsible organization with zero tolerance for graft.

While declaring the event open, the Executive Secretary, National Sugar Development Council Mr. Zacch Adedeji, represented by the Director, Finance and Accounts, Alhaji Auwalu Abubakar Shira, said the Council has an existing policy that checkmates the activities of staff and doesn’t treat any wrongdoing with kid gloves.

He assured the ICPC delegation of the Council’s readiness to partner with the Commission in its avowed determination to rid the system of practices that are antithetical to growth and national prosperity.

In a paper presentation, leader of the team and a Deputy Director at the Commission, Mr. Demola Bakare said corruption is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of the society and has portrayed Nigeria in a bad light over the years.

His paper titled “Upholding Ethical and Integrity Principles in the Public Service: The Role of ACTU, Mr. Bakare spoke on the concept of integrity, causes of lack of integrity, indiscipline and corruption and practical mechanism for upholding integrity and combating corruption.

On the importance of ACTU in MDAs, Mr. Bakare said it promotes and protects the image of the organization, assist in building an honest and transparent workforce as well as supports Management to implement policies.
